Geriatric Physiotherapy
Geriatric physiotherapy, also known as elder or senior physiotherapy, is a specialized branch of physiotherapy focused on addressing the unique healthcare needs and challenges of older adults. As individuals age, they may experience various physical, functional, and cognitive changes, and geriatric physiotherapists work to optimize their overall well-being and quality of life.
Assessment:
Geriatric physiotherapists assess the physical, functional, and cognitive status of older adults to identify areas of concern and develop tailored treatment plans.
Evaluation may include assessing balance, strength, flexibility, coordination, mobility, and the impact of chronic conditions on daily activities.
Fall Prevention:
Falls are a significant concern among the elderly. Physiotherapists design exercises and interventions to improve balance, coordination, and strength, reducing the risk of falls.
Mobility and Independence:
Focus on maintaining or improving mobility and functional independence in activities of daily living (ADLs), such as walking, dressing, and bathing.
Pain Management:
Addressing pain associated with conditions like osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and other musculoskeletal issues through exercise, manual therapy, and pain management techniques.
Chronic Disease Management:
Managing and improving the physical function of older adults with chronic conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases, and respiratory disorders.
